Virtus Bologna begin their league campaign with an emphatic victory at the Itelyum Arena, defeating Varese 90-69. The hosts managed to respond after a difficult start but were unable to maintain their momentum when the game reached its decisive stage. Alex Mumbrú’s team made the stronger start, immediately looking to impose their tempo and consistently finding their way to the basket. Virtus pushed the pace, moved the ball effectively and, above all, managed to limit the transition opportunities that are one of the main features of Ioannis Kastritis’ Varese side, which was without McDowell-White and Della Valle.
After the opening ten minutes, Bologna led 26-21 and continued to control the game throughout the second quarter. The visitors went into halftime with a 47-39 advantage, with Derrick Alston Jr., Kessler Edwards and Tommaso Baldasso among Virtus’ most influential players.
Varese, however, refused to give in and returned from the locker room with renewed energy. The support from the Itelyum Arena began to make a difference, and the red-and-whites started to play with greater confidence. Davide Alviti caught fire, while Hunter Hale attempted to drive the offense with his ability to create his own shot even in the most difficult situations. Hale, one of Varese’s most eagerly anticipated summer signings, is expected to become one of the team’s main offensive weapons.
Varese’s response brought the game back to life. The hosts cut the deficit to just two points, raising hopes of a potential turnaround. For a few minutes, Virtus appeared to be losing control, but Bologna refused to unravel. The final quarter, however, ultimately decided the contest. Hale tried to keep Varese alive with five consecutive points to make it 70-63, but Virtus responded immediately. Baldasso and Trent Frazier sparked the run that pushed Bologna ahead 77-63, forcing Kastritis to call a timeout.
From that moment on, Virtus increased their defensive pressure, capitalized on the hosts’ mistakes and pulled away for good, turning the closing minutes into a comfortable march toward their first league victory of the season.
The final 90-69 scoreline was perhaps harsher on Varese than the game itself suggested for long stretches. The hosts deserve credit for recovering from a difficult first half and getting back within a single possession. The difference came in the management of the decisive moments: Bologna remained composed, while Varese paid the price for several turnovers and an offensive drop-off precisely when one final push was required.
Baldasso and Alston led Virtus with 17 points each, Edwards added 12 and Carr finished with 11. For Varese, the 14 points scored by both Alviti and Hale were not enough.
For Virtus, this was an important response following their European trip to Istanbul to face Fenerbahçe. Bologna had shown encouraging signs despite losing their EuroLeague opener and arrived in Varese looking above all for consistency and concentration throughout the full 40 minutes, an aspect also highlighted by Mumbrú after the game.
Varese, meanwhile, can build on their third-quarter reaction and the character they showed when the game appeared to be slipping away, especially considering the absence of two important players. Kastritis’ work will now focus on turning those stretches of good basketball into sustained performances, particularly against top-level opposition.
In the end, one thing is certain: Virtus Bologna leave Varese with a convincing 90-69 victory to open their league campaign, while the red-and-whites will have to learn from a comeback that ultimately remained unfinished.
