Pedro Acosta wrote a new chapter in his career today by claiming his first MotoGP victory at the Red Bull Ring. The Spanish KTM rider dominated the Austrian Grand Prix after a hard-fought race, turning the disappointment of Saturday’s Sprint into a remarkable triumph at his team’s home circuit.
Starting from third on the grid, Acosta remained among the frontrunners during the opening stages of the race before taking the lead for good on lap nine. From that moment on, the 22-year-old Spaniard imposed his pace and never surrendered first place, crossing the finish line ahead of Jorge Martin.
For Martin, who started from pole position, second place still represents an important result in terms of the World Championship. The Aprilia rider finished runner-up and strengthened his championship lead, having already managed to gain ground during Saturday’s Sprint.
Marco Bezzecchi took the third step of the podium after delivering a solid performance on the other Aprilia. The Italian completed a podium that confirmed the excellent form of the Noale manufacturer at the Austrian circuit.
It was a more difficult day, however, for Marc Márquez. The reigning World Champion, who started from second on the grid, lost ground in the early stages and was unable to match the pace of his main rivals. He eventually finished fifth, bringing to a close a weekend in which Ducati struggled to show the same speed as Aprilia and KTM.
Acosta’s victory carries even greater significance because of the way it came about. On Saturday, the Spaniard saw a potential Sprint victory slip away after crashing while leading. Twenty-four hours later, however, he responded in the most convincing way possible: a controlled race, a decisive overtake on Martin and the first victory of his career in MotoGP’s premier class.
The Austrian Grand Prix therefore leaves the championship looking increasingly fascinating. Martin leaves the Red Bull Ring as the championship leader, while Acosta finally celebrates his maiden MotoGP victory in front of KTM’s home crowd. Bezzecchi completes a positive day for Aprilia, while Márquez will be looking to bounce back at the next round of the championship.
