Jonas Vingegaard chose the climb to Pila to change the face of the 2026 Giro d’Italia. On Stage 14, from Aosta to Pila-Gressan, the Team Visma-Lease a Bike rider delivered a powerful and decisive performance, taking both the stage victory and the Maglia Rosa.
The 133-kilometre route, packed with over 4,000 metres of climbing, was always expected to be one of the key days of this Giro. It proved to be exactly that. The race gradually came to life through the Alpine roads of the Aosta Valley, with attacks, selections and a growing sense that the general classification was about to be rewritten.
Visma-Lease a Bike controlled the race with precision, setting a hard tempo and preparing the ground for Vingegaard’s final move. On the demanding climb to Pila, the Danish rider changed rhythm and immediately created a gap. No one was able to follow him.
Felix Gall tried to limit the damage, while Jai Hindley also fought hard to stay close, but Vingegaard continued to open the advantage all the way to the finish line. His victory was not just a stage success: it was a clear message to all his rivals.
Afonso Eulálio, who started the day in the Maglia Rosa, suffered on the final climb and lost contact with the strongest riders. His time loss cost him the overall lead, handing the pink jersey to Vingegaard, who now becomes the new man to beat in this Giro d’Italia.
For Vingegaard, this was already his third stage victory in the race, but the win in Pila carries a special weight. It came on a mountain stage, against his direct rivals, and with the general classification on the line. From this point on, the Giro seems to have a new master.
Ferrari-style precision from his team, a devastating acceleration from the leader, and total control on the final climb: Visma-Lease a Bike turned the stage into a tactical masterpiece.
The Pila finish will remain one of the defining moments of this Giro d’Italia. Vingegaard did not simply win a stage — he took command of the race.
