Starting in 2027, fuel in all World Championship categories will be 100% non-fossil fuel, and its nature will be assessed using the C14 system.
The C14 test measures the fraction of C14, the shortest-lived carbon isotope, missing from fossil fuels due to its long-term decomposition, out of total carbon, and compares it with standard levels found in the atmosphere.
For MotoGP fuels from 2027, we will have the same figures minus a tolerance, so the C14 content of the fuel sample must match that of the atmosphere, ruling out the possibility that the fuel is of fossil origin.
Therefore, fuels will not be obtained through the refining of crude oil and, initially, may be:
• biofuels, i.e., fuels obtained from biological sources;
• e-fuels, obtained by directly capturing CO2 from the atmosphere.
Combusting non-fossil fuels releases the same amount of carbon as previously captured. MotoGP took a major step in this direction in 2024 by requiring fuels to contain at least 40% non-fossil fuels. This transition will now continue with a fully mandatory switch to 100% non-fossil fuels in 2027, which requires a significant shift from current fuels, which are primarily derived from the refining of crude oil.
