Max Verstappen won the sprint race at the Singapore Grand Prix, once again demonstrating his competitiveness on street circuits. The Dutch driver managed the short race with great confidence, keeping the two Ferraris – which finished second and third – at bay.
Rounding off the podium were Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, who put in a solid performance that allowed the Maranello-based team to celebrate a significant one-two finish in the Marina Bay Sprint Race. For the Italian team, this is an encouraging sign ahead of Sunday’s Grand Prix, which awards the full haul of championship points.
It was Kimi Antonelli, the current leader of the drivers’ championship, who delivered a disappointing result. The young Mercedes driver finished the sprint in fourth place, unable to keep up with the leading trio. Whilst this result does not jeopardise his lead in the championship, it does highlight just how tight and fiercely contested the competition remains in the final stages of the season.
The Marina Bay circuit, one of the most demanding on the calendar due to its urban layout featuring low walls, tight corners and little room for error, continues to prove a favourable ground for Verstappen, who is able to get the most out of his car even in shortened race conditions such as the sprint race.
For Ferrari, this one-two finish on the podium is a much-needed breath of fresh air at a stage of the season when every point counts in the battle for the respective championships, both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ titles. Hamilton and Leclerc will now need to capitalise on this good feeling with the car in Sunday’s main race as well, aiming to turn their sprint race performance into an even more significant result in terms of points.
It remains to be seen whether Antonelli will be able to bounce back and reclaim centre stage in the Grand Prix itself, defending his lead in the overall standings against a group of challengers who, in Singapore, proved they can force their way into the battle for the top positions. The Marina Bay weekend therefore promises to be full of excitement and key outcomes for the balance of power in the Formula 1 World Championship, with Sunday’s race set to reshape the overall standings once again with just a few races remaining in the season.
